The teams competing in the Austrian Women’s Rugby 7s Series met up in Viktor-Franz-Straße for the second tournament of 2025.

The day started with a tough defeat. We kicked things off against the reigning champs, Stade, who reminded us why they’re top of the table (0-34).

Then came Donau, and while we managed to dot one try down, they still took the win away (5-36).

Therefore, in what seems to become a tradition, we met our familiar frenemies, the Kernöltigers, in the 5th place playoff. This time, the end result was 15-0 in our favour, and therefore we locked down that 5th place finish once again.

Massive thank you to Vienna Celtic Rugby Football Club and Rugby Club Krems, and to the Rugby Club Graz women’s team for putting on a great day!

Results:

• vs Rugby Club Stade: 0-34
• vs Rugby Union Donau Wien: 5-26
• vs Kernöltigers (RG Graz / ARC Leoben / RC Tigers): 15-0

Tournament ranking:

1. Stade Rugby Club
2. RU Donau
3. SG Dolphins
4. SG Wombats RC / Spartans RC
5. SG Valkyries / Celtic / Krems
6. SG Kernöltigers

On Saturday, march 22nd we met our team mates from Rugby Club Krems and Vienna Celtic Rugby Football Club at Krems’ home pitch in beautiful Wachau.

Coming back into the spring leg of the season on 5th place of the table we were placed in a pool with the team from Rugby Union Donau Wien and the Styrian-Carinthian Dolphins (mixed team from RC Graz, ARC Leoben and RC Tigers).

Kicking off, we hit the pitch with a bang. The opening to our game day was a tidy 22-5 win over the Donau women.

Against the Dolphins, we couldn’t keep up the drive and had to accept a big and painful defeat (0 – 34).

With every team in the group landing one win and one loss, it all came down to points difference. Since we had the lowest we met the second mix-team from Graz / Leoben / Klagenfurt, the Kernöltigers. Fueled by determination and maybe a little leftover rage, we took a strong 38-17 win and took 5th place home.

A big shoutout goes to Bernadette Kern from Rugby Club Krems. She put on a great performance for her home crowd, scored multiple tries and hit it with a few try saving tackles. Also, kudos to the Players from Vienna Celtic who put on the green Leoben-jersey for the day to help out with the Kernöltigers – that’s what true rugby spirit is all about.

Big thanks to Rugby Club Krems for the great hosting and vibes – good job on your first women’s rugby event since 2016 😉

Final results:

• vs Rugby Union Donau Wien: 22-5
• vs Dolphins (RG Graz / ARC Leoben / RC Tigers): 0-34
• vs Kernöltigers (RG Graz / ARC Leoben / RC Tigers): 38-17

Tournament ranking:

1. Stade Rugby Club
2. SG Wombats RC / Spartans RC
3. SG Dolphins
4. RU Donau
5. SG Valkyries / Celtic / Krems
6. SG Kernöltigers

While our initial logo did very literally showcase who we are – valkyries, nordic mythical female warriors – it did not represent us beyond that and how we have developed within the last 3 years. “Our” Valkyrie was created in january of 2023 by Stefan Kirchweger, the brother of our long time player Kathy Kirchweger. It served us well during our founding times and first baby steps into indepence.

As we got to know ourselves as a club better, as we evolved and developed, we saw a growing need to re-do our visual identity. While we currently do not have the funds to update for example match gear, we do feel like the time is right to start re-branding and give us a “fresh face”. And this is it:

The colour purple and the differend shades showcased stand for unconventionality, exceptionalism and femininity. It is also a re-connection to the original Valkyries identity and the RC Linz (our “vereinsrechtlicher Hauptverein”).

“V” in the center piece not only stands for the Valkyries, but also for vision, virtue and positive vibes.

The shape of the center piece clearly identifies us as a rugby team. It’s rounded ends and the middle seam differentiate the shape from other ball forms.

Wide open wings on either side of the rugby ball are an hommage to the mythological Valkyries, who were fierce warriors. Their different shades of purple showcase the similarity of us yet also our differences which make us US.

Doubling as blazing flames the wing shapes also incorporate an essential World Rugby value in the design: passion. Their rimless shapes reiterate the openess which we want to actively try and live in our club.

As players of the Valkyries WRC we are connected and protected by the wings of our community. Our individual shapes, colours and positions come together to form our team with all its facettes.

Together we shape Valkyries Women’s Rugby Club.
